I stuck a couple of lengths of clear fuel line on the supply return and noticed that if i had not started the engine for a while the symptoms appeared - long story short, under the pump is a large bung with what appeared to be a wet patch of diesel - i unscrewed this plug and replaced the 'O' ring - wet patch disappeared and no more air in the fuel line - I guess the seals on the top of the pump will start to go soon:-).
